Marionettes and shadow puppets and hand puppets, oh my! Not to mention puppet hula hoops and performing found objects. There is something for everyone in this three-day festival of contemporary puppetry.
Puppets Retake Northeast Los Angeles features three programs of performances. June 6th kicks off with Leslie Gray’s moving shadow puppet story of a river rescue, Beth Peterson’s toy theatre paean to Charles Lummis, and Paul Zaloom’s ribald contemporary take on the Punch and Judy show (Adult themed).
June 7th continues with duo Caitlin Lainoff and DanRae Wilson’s toy theater show about the development of Los Angeles, and Yelena Zhelezov’s diorama recreation of an art event on the LA River.
June 8th brings an especially family friendly program that includes Gina Pavlova’s sly use of ordinary objects to tell fairy tales, Elizabeth Luce’s nautical buddy story, Christine Papalexis’ found object goddess tale and a special historic show recreated from the vaults of the International Puppetry Museum in Pasadena.
This event is made possible in part by support from the City of Los Angeles, Department of Cultural Affairs and the International Puppetry Museum. It is family friendly and free and open to the public.
