A new charter school is taking shape in the neighborhood…this is from my friend Kim Johnson, Mom & Enthusiast for Education Reform:
One of the downsides to the area is the lack of decent public education. I am trying to get the word out on this incredible school that will be opening in our area in September of 2012 (if we raise the money required by the school district!!). Please share this information with anyone who might be interested. If they have children… regardless how young… they would be interested!!! Please also forward to anyone interested in education reform or people in our community who realize that a quality education would boost the value of our homes! Please forward to anyone who is not happy with the current selection of public education….now is our chance to make a big leap in the quality of education provided to our community!
El Rio Charter School will be a public K-8 school based on the Waldorf methodologies. I toured the “sister” school called Ocean Charter in Culver City and was totally blown away. I was even prepared to make the insanely ridiculous commute with my son (turning 5 in August) had we gotten in via the lottery (we didn’t). I was impressed above and beyond and so desperately want something like it for my boys!!!! Dream a little dream and it comes true??? Apparently so… coming soon to a neighborhood near me (and you!) …. El Rio Charter School!!!Please take a moment to check out El Rio’s website… pass on the info to other families you know in and around the area. El Rio needs to raise 250k by summer in order to be approved by LAUSD! (Apparently, LAUSD will reimburse operating costs after their first year so the school will have to be self funding in order to get up and running.) It’s a truly amazing, highly organized and incredibly stalwart group of families starting this effort and they do not plan for this school to be the only… just the first of many!
The sister school that I mention above is highly sought after and well regarded by people who can afford private education but choose Ocean instead. I say that because before I knew that El Rio Charter was coming to our area, I was prepared to move my family to the west side so that my son could attend Ocean Charter if he had gotten into the school (it’s lottery based). I know of a family that traveled from Westlake Village to Ocean Charter daily because the school experience was that valuable to them!
